Georgetown admits transfer students from community college, four-year institutions, and international universities. Transfer applicants must have graduated from high school or earned a high school diploma equivalent, and should have completed at least one full-time semester (at least twelve transferable credits or equivalent), but no more than four full-time semesters.
High school students currently enrolled in a dual enrollment program, earning both high school and college credit towards their high school graduation requirements, must apply as a first-year applicant.
Georgetown is committed to a holistic admission process, and transfer files are reviewed by Admission Committees. A cumulative B+ average or higher is recommended for transfer admission consideration.
Transfer Coursework Suggestions
There are no specific courses required for transfer admission consideration, but most competitive transfer applicants demonstrate strength in college coursework closely aligned to both Georgetown Core and school/major requirements. The following insights are provided to address some of your questions about coursework at your current institution, as related to each of Georgetown’s six undergraduate schools.
- Prospective applicants are encouraged to pursue coursework aligned with the Georgetown Core, including world language coursework (or have intermediate-level proficiency).
- The Admissions Committee is interested in learning more about an applicant’s fit for their intended major. For rising sophomores, foundational coursework in the intended major is recommended, while junior transfers should have some intermediate-level coursework in their intended area of study.
- Rising junior applicants to the College’s Joint Program in Environment & Sustainability should have as much of the Georgetown Core completed as possible.

- The A.B. in Public Policy provides students with the opportunity to explore Georgetown’s liberal arts curriculum on the Hilltop Campus for the first two years of study. As juniors, students transition to the Capitol Campus to engage with interdisciplinary frameworks of policy design and implementation, build specialized skills, and experience life at the center of the policy world.
- Rising sophomore transfer applicants are encouraged to have completed as much of the Georgetown Core as possible.
- Rising junior transfers should have completed the majority, if not all, of the Georgetown Core at the time of application. Note that world language coursework at an intermediate level, or demonstrated proficiency equivalent to an intermediate level, is highly recommended.
- Previous coursework in Public Policy can assist applicants in refining their interests, but is not an expectation. All transfer students can take the Public Policy gateway course How Public Policy Works (PPOL 2000) once at Georgetown.
- Prospective transfer applicants are encouraged to undertake Human Anatomy I & II, Chemistry, liberal arts coursework aligned with the Georgetown Core, and 1000- and 2000-level courses as noted in the BSN curriculum guide.

- Prospective students who plan to pursue a premedical track should have completed a year of Biology and/or Chemistry prior to enrolling at Georgetown. Additionally, one semester of Probability and Statistics is recommended.
- Prospective transfer applicants are encouraged to take college/university coursework aligned with the SFS Core Curriculum.
- The study of a world language other than English is of utmost importance, including beginner and intermediate level coursework (or demonstrated proficiency in a modern world language).
- All prospective SFS transfer applicants are strongly encouraged to present coursework (or AP/IB Equivalents) in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and either Statistics or Calculus.
- Some rising-sophomore transfers and many rising-junior transfers will present coursework aligned with requirements of one of their intended majors.
- Prospective transfer applicants are encouraged to take college/university coursework aligned with McDonough’s University and Liberal Arts Core. Special attention will be given to coursework (or AP/IB Equivalents) in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Calculus. Coursework in statistics is also helpful.
- Some rising-sophomore transfers and many rising-junior transfers will present coursework aligned with McDonough’s Business Core or Major requirements.
Test Requirements
Georgetown University requires submission of SAT and/or ACT scores as part of our holistic review process for all students who have graduated high school within five years of their intended entry to Georgetown. Candidates for admission should submit an official score report from the College Board and/or ACT. Georgetown requires submission of at least one full SAT or ACT and does not accept superscores.

- Georgetown only considers the Verbal (EBRW) and Math portions of the SAT in our review process
- Students must submit an official score report from the ACT.
- Georgetown does not consider the writing portion of the ACT.
- Georgetown highly recommends submission of the science section of the ACT, especially for students seeking to major in the sciences.
- Georgetown recommends, but does not require, results from an English language proficiency test for students who attend a school where English is not the language of instruction.
- Georgetown accepts results from the DET (Duolingo English Test), IELTS, or TOEFL® (PBT, iBT® and IPT® Plus versions), to fulfill this recommendation.
Transfer Credit Evaluations
Credit towards Georgetown degrees may be granted for courses taken at other accredited institutions. After a student is admitted to Georgetown, students will submit a credit evaluation form, and a transfer credit evaluation will be conducted by the respective Dean’s Office of the school to which the student was admitted. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions does not determine transfer credit, and credit evaluations are not available for prospective students.
Credit awarded for courses taken at other institutions are based on the following criteria:
- Credit for required courses will be given if the course is similar to the one required at Georgetown.
- Credit for electives will be given if the course is similar to courses offered at Georgetown. Credit for courses not offered at Georgetown will be considered on an individual basis.
- Grades earned must be at least one level above minimum passing level. Passing grades on a Pass/Fail system are acceptable if defined as C or better.
- The maximum number of transferable credits is one-half of the total required for the degree (60 credits). All transfer students must enroll as full-time students. They must spend a minimum of four full-time semesters taking courses at Georgetown to earn a degree. Summer sessions and study abroad programs will not count toward fulfilling this requirement.
