Transfer Applicant

Thank you for your interest in applying to Georgetown University as a transfer student. Transfer students serve as a vital part of our University community and excel in each of the University’s six undergraduate schools. The University, through its Committee on Admissions, selects those transfer students most likely to profit from the educational offerings of Georgetown. Each year, the admissions committee evaluates approximately 2,500 applications for transfer.

Georgetown is committed to a holistic admission process, and transfer files are reviewed by Admission Committees. Typically, a cumulative B+ average or higher is recommended for transfer admission consideration.

Georgetown admits transfer students who have attended community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. Transfer applicants must have graduated from high school or earned a high school diploma equivalent, and should have completed at least one full-time semester of at least twelve transferable credits, or the equivalent, on the college level but no more than four full-time semesters. High school students currently enrolled in a dual enrollment program, earning both high school and college credit towards their high school graduation requirements, must submit the first-year application.

In recent years the Admissions Committee has had the opportunity to consider transfer applicants for Spring admission (January 2027 for current applicants) in addition to our traditional Fall transfer class. The Committee’s ability to consider Spring transfer applicants varies from year to year. Applicants who indicate an interest in both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 consideration will first be reviewed for Fall 2026 admission. Indicating an additional interest in Spring consideration will not lessen any applicant’s chances of Fall admission. (NB: As students must spend a minimum of four full semesters and earn 60 credits in residency at Georgetown to earn a degree, only candidates with an estimated 45 credit/hours or less of completed coursework by June 2026 – rising sophomores and not rising juniors – will be considered for January 2027 admission.)

Special note regarding Fall 2026 Capitol Applied Learning Lab (CALL) consideration: In addition to Main (Hilltop) Campus consideration, transfer applicants to Georgetown’s College of Arts & Sciences’ humanities and social science departments will have the additional option to be considered for admission to the CALL for CALL-specific coursework and Capitol Campus residence for the Fall 2026 semester with a planned transition to the Main (Hilltop) Campus starting with the Spring 2027 semester. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the CALL’s website , affirmatively indicate their interest in CALL consideration when prompted within the transfer application, and provide a brief statement of interest in the CALL as related to personal and career goals. Indicating an interest in CALL consideration will not lessen an applicant’s chances for Main (Hilltop) Campus admission.

Transfer applicants must provide official college/university transcripts from all previous institutions, as well as a completed Dean’s Report, Professor’s Report and Secondary School Report that includes the final high school transcript. Transfer applicants are required to provide either an SAT or ACT exam as part of the application process, unless the candidate has been out of high school for five or more years prior to the date of intended matriculation at Georgetown.

For important information about the 2026 application process, we recommend you to download and review the Information for Transfer Applicants document.

We are, unfortunately, not able to guarantee alumni interviews for transfer applicants. If a volunteer alumni interviewer is available in your area, you will be contacted by email. Since we are unable to guarantee the availability of an interview, it is not a required part of the transfer application process. (NB: Alumni interviews, if available, are assigned according to a transfer applicant’s “academic year address” as noted on the Georgetown Transfer Application; interviews typically occur between late February and very early April.)

Since we communicate with candidates about scheduling alumni interviews as well as missing credentials via e-mail, we kindly ask that you allow access for georgetown.edu e-mail addresses through any spam filters you or your internet service provider employs. Blocked e-mails of a timely nature can hinder critical communication.

Transfer Course Suggestions

As a prospective transfer applicant, you likely have questions about course selection at your current institution, both to present a competitive transfer application and to maximize the likelihood of credit transfer. While there are no specific courses required for transfer admission consideration, most competitive transfer applicants demonstrate strength in college/university coursework closely aligned to both Georgetown Core and school/major requirements. The following insights are provided to address some of your questions about coursework at your current institution, as related to each of Georgetown’s six undergraduate schools.

Each year, the College of Arts & Sciences community is enriched by transfers who come to us through the transfer process. Our goal in the Dean’s Office is to welcome transfers, support them in their intended major or path toward a new one, and remain as flexible as possible regarding transfer credits while upholding university-level academic policies. We encourage you to read more about our academic policies here.
The College of Arts & Sciences welcomes transfers interested in studying the humanities, social sciences, and sciences and the intersections between disciplines. Please note that no specific courses are required for admission, but most competitive applicants will have pursued college/university coursework as noted below.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to pursue coursework aligned with the Georgetown Core, including 100- and/or 200- level coursework in a world language other than English or hold a demonstrated proficiency equivalent to the same.
Regarding classes in an applicant’s prospective major, a foundation of 1000-level coursework for rising-sophomores and 2000- level coursework for rising-juniors will provide the Admissions Committee insights on an applicant’s abilities specific to their intended area of study. Please consult the College of Arts & Sciences Majors, Minors & Certificates page for further details on the fifty-one majors offered within the College.
As with all undergraduate schools at Georgetown, a maximum of 60 transfer credits may be applied toward the Georgetown degree. Summer and study abroad credits are subject to their own maximums as well. The maximum ceiling on transfer credits is established to protect the minimum number of credits one should earn at Georgetown to earn the Georgetown degree (half). Transfer students who have more that 60 eligible transfer credits can work with their dean to determine the most “useful” 60 to transfer, based on their unique program.
Rising-junior applicants to the College’s Joint Program in Environment and Sustainability should have as much of the Georgetown Core completed as possible.

The A.B. in Public Policy provides students with the opportunity to explore Georgetown’s liberal arts curriculum on the Hilltop Campus for the first two years of study. As juniors, students transition to the Capitol Campus to engage with interdisciplinary frameworks of policy design and implementation, build specialized skills and experience life at the center of the policy world.
As such, rising-sophomore transfer applicants are encouraged to have started – if not completed –  as many portions of the Georgetown Core as possible. Rising-junior transfers should have completed the majority, if not all, of the Georgetown Core at the time of application. Note that coursework at an intermediate II level (2000+) in a world language other than English, or demonstrated proficiency equivalent to intermediate II or above, is highly recommended.
Previous coursework in Public Policy can assist applicants in refining their interests, but is not an expectation. All transfer students can take the Public Policy gateway course How Public Policy Works (PPOL 2000) once at Georgetown.

The School of Foreign Service, the oldest school of international affairs in the United States, prepares students for careers of global impact in both public and private sectors. Please note that while no specific courses are required for admission, most competitive applicants will have pursued college/university coursework as noted below.
Prospective transfer applicants are encouraged to take college/university coursework aligned with the SFS Core Curriculum . The study of a world language other than English is of special importance, including 1000- and/or 2000- level coursework or a demonstrated proficiency equivalent to the same. All prospective SFS transfer applicants are strongly encouraged to present coursework (or AP/IB equivalents*) in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and either statistics or calculus. (*2025-26 Undergraduate Bulletin Advanced Credit )
Some rising-sophomore transfers and many rising-junior transfers will present coursework aligned with requirements within one of the eight Majors with the School of Foreign Service.

The McDonough School of Business integrates business and liberal arts courses to develop a student’s critical thinking, analytical, reasoning and leadership skills. Please note that while no specific courses are required for admission, most competitive applicants will have pursued college/university coursework as noted below.

Prospective students who plan to pursue a premedical  curriculum, in addition to their major, should have completed a year of Biology and/or Chemistry prior to enrolling at Georgetown. Ideally students will have completed a semester of Probability and Statistics as well.

Georgetown’s Berkley School of Nursing builds upon a 120-year legacy of preparing healthcare professionals. BSN candidates blend liberal arts coursework with world-class faculty instruction in the biological, physical and social sciences, along with 800+ hours of clinical, lab, simulation and experiential hours.
